IHS

Leadership

Jeff Rosenthal, DVM

Chief Executive Officer

2024 marks Jeff’s 24th year with the Idaho Humane Society. After graduating from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he practiced as a small animal practitioner in Southern Oregon for 7 years prior to becoming Medical Director for the IHS’s Veterinary Medical Center in 2000. In 2002, he transitioned to become the Chief Executive Officer of IHS.

During his time in leadership, the organization has seen dramatic improvement in the save rate for sheltered pets alongside the creation of innovative programs such as our correctional facility-based dog training program, expansion of spay and neuter efforts, our Pet Food Pantry, and the expansion of full-service low-cost veterinary care for public clients. The number of employees has more than doubled, and he oversaw a successful 16 million dollar Capital Campaign to complete our new Adoption, Veterinary Medical, and Humane Education Centers. He is also credited for significant improvements to Idaho’s animal welfare laws including a crucial law providing for the forfeiture of abused animals from those who treat them with neglect or cruelty, a felony animal fighting statute, and the State’s at-risk and dangerous dog statute.

An unusual feature of his role at the Idaho Humane Society comes from a career-long interest and extensive training in veterinary orthopedic surgery. In addition to fulfilling all the responsibilities of CEO, each and every week Jeff continues to provide advanced orthopedic procedures for shelter and publicly owned pets. This expertise within an animal shelter is unique and allows us to restore pain-free mobility to hundreds of pets each year.

Jeff’s family moved to Boise in 1980, and he was excited to return to our community. His entire immediate family lives in Boise.

She currently oversees out of state transfer program, the foster program and more! Dee Dee studied Management and English at Rio Salado College.

LEAH CLARK

Director of Development and Stewardship

Leah Stephens Clark joins the Idaho Humane Society with a background in education, the arts, and nonprofits. A native of Boise, Leah’s fondness for the city she calls home is profound and her love of the community is clear to those who meet her. One of the things she loves about development work is meeting new people and learning how IHS has impacted their lives. There are so many great stories to tell! She is grateful for a work-life balance that allows her to spend time in her 1979 Dodge Transvan (jealous?), teaching dance, and planting in her garden. She has two cats, Benjamin and Mae Mobley, dogs Julian and Mort, all adopted from the Idaho Humane Society over the years. Her pets bring her almost as much joy as her children, Rafferty and Matilde.

angela costanzo

Chief People Officer

Angela joined the Idaho Humane Society in May 2023. Born and raised in Idaho, she deeply appreciates everything her home state has to offer and couldn’t imagine residing anywhere else.

Angela has over 23 years of experience in human resources and safety management, having worked across diverse industries such as manufacturing and construction. Her passion for HR stems from her enjoyment of working directly with employees and serving as an advocate for the company. Angela remains committed to ensuring the well-being of individuals, constantly striving to maintain a safe and injury-free environment. She is also certified through OSHA as a Safety & Health General Industry Specialist and a Safety & Health Construction Specialist.

In her personal life, Angela shares her home with two beloved American Staffordshire Terriers named Angel and Tyson. Their presence is such that Angela playfully recounts how she and her husband had to invest in a king-size bed to ensure their dogs’ utmost comfort during the night. During her leisure time, Angela cherishes moments spent with her family, all of whom reside locally.

LAURIE DART

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR

Laurie started volunteering for the Idaho Humane Society through a veterinary assistant program in 1991 when she was 21 years old. When she completed her volunteer hours, she was offered a job as a veterinary assistant and eventually became a veterinary technician. Laurie has had her CET license since 1993 and received her CVT license in 2003. In addition to her work at IHS, she has filled in and worked part-time at other veterinary hospitals around the valley.

Dr. Adrian Dannis

shelter medicine manager

Dr. Dannis joined the Idaho Humane Society in 2021 after graduating from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in Massachusetts. There she was the president of the Shelter Medicine Club and Feline Medicine Club. One of her highlights while in vet school was traveling to Africa as a fourth year with Kenyan & Danish veterinary students sterilizing Kenyan free-roaming dogs.

Dr. Dannis has owned various pets since childhood, including dogs, cats, chickens, hamsters, guinea pigs, and a turtle; she always knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. After a year-long rotating internship at a Boston veterinary hospital, she moved to Boise to work at the Idaho Humane Society without visiting the state. She has since fallen in love with biking the greenbelt, trying not to kill her garden, hiking, exploring downtown Boise and attending various events.

She currently has two shelter cats at home, Juniper and Snooki, and two dogs, Birdie (a Shiba Inu) and Rory (an Australian Shepherd). Dr. Dannis is most passionate about access to veterinary care and providing shelter animals with the same compassion and care she would want for her own pets.

Leann Gilberg

Chief Financial Officer

When Leann came aboard as the Idaho Humane Society’s CFO in 2012, she’d already been involved with the organization for over half a decade, previously serving on the board of directors as well as the finance committee. Leann grew up with animals and loves working for a cause so near and dear to her heart. She and her family live with three IHS alums – two dogs, Bella and Jackson, and one cat, Callie.

Originally from Montana, Leann has called Boise home for more than 20 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in political science from the University of Montana and has been a CPA since 1992.

In addition to watching her kids play sports and coaching her daughter’s lacrosse team, Leann likes to play tennis in her spare time.

Krystal also has a wild child BLM mustang named Hiccup, and a tiny black panther, aka cat named Peaches. Krystal enjoys fostering stressed-out medical cats and, when not working, enjoys reading, camping, hunting, playing softball, and traveling to places she’s never been.

Idaho Humane Society

Craig Nixon

Animal Control Director

Craig moved to Idaho to attend The College of Idaho to continue his college education and pursue playing collegiate baseball. It did not take long until he realized that this move to Idaho from California would change his outlook on life and his appreciation for what Idaho has to offer.

In April 2023, Craig joined the Idaho Humane Society as the Director of Animal Care and Control. Soon thereafter, Craig retired from the Boise Police Department after serving the Boise community for 25 years. During that time, Craig held several positions within BPD, but ended his career as a Sergeant for the Bike Patrol Unit and as one of the last remaining original members of the Boise Police Honor Guard – two of the most rewarding duties held during his law enforcement career. The transition from the Boise Police Department to the Idaho Humane Society has also been worthwhile, as it has allowed Craig to combine his experience in law enforcement with his love for animals.

Craig has two pets – Kali who was adopted from IHS in 2016, and a cat named Cleo. When not working, Craig enjoys spending time with his wife and family, traveling, and playing golf (even on bad days).

Idaho Humane Society

Laura Pegram

Volunteer Services Manager

Originally hailing from West Virginia and Ohio, Laura moved to Idaho in 2007. She is a graduate of Bishop Kelly and later went on to earn a BA in Public Administration from Cedarville University. She joined IHS in late 2021 to follow her passion for helping animals. “I loved animals as a young child and wanted to be a herpetologist when I grew up.

Professionally, I pursued avenues in social services, and IHS allows me to help people and animals in a job that makes a real difference in our community,” says Laura.

Laura loves working with people daily in her role as the Volunteer Manager. It’s especially rewarding for her to see animals connected to their forever homes. She is a big believer in rescue. She and her husband have adopted 2 dogs, Zeus and Chiron (who you can find napping in her office most days!), 4 cats, Magnus, Little Foot, Narcissa, Neville, and 5 rats: Swiss, Smudge, Wishbone, Nick Viall, and Juan Pablo. They also foster animals regularly for the Idaho Humane Society.

When Laura is not busy providing love, care, and enrichment for her animals, you can find her watching Gilmore Girls or the Bachelor, eating Mexican food, and gardening.

Kristopher Shaffer

Chief Operations Officer

Kris began his animal welfare journey in 2014 when he worked with the Arizona Humane Society. During his time with AHS, he was fortunate to gain experience across many operational departments and take advantage of several educational opportunities. Next, he found himself running shelter operations at a mid-sized rescue in Tempe, Arizona, whose primary mission was providing temporary care for animals whose owners were in distress or had fallen on tough times.

Most recently, he was the Assistant Director of Animal Management for a municipality in Texas. While in Texas, Kris gained experience with code enforcement, investigations, and emergency response. Kris holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University and an Animal Shelter Management Certificate from the University of the Pacific. He has received training through several organizations during his time in animal welfare, including Emancipet, Maddie’s Fund, and Austin Pets Alive!

Kris, a Boise native, is thrilled to return after more than three decades away. He looks forward to spending more time with his extended family and parents. Kris shares his free time with Daisy, Badger, and Paul, three rambunctious rescues from Texas.

Kristine Schellhaas

PR and Digital Media Manager

Kristine joined the Idaho Humane Society in late 2017. After her husband retired from the US Marine Corps, their family moved back home to Boise where she was able to realize her goal of working to make a difference for animals.

Previous to joining IHS, Kristine founded and sold a digital media company. She is also a published author, keynote speaker, and has dedicated more than 10,000 volunteer hours serving the military community. She has served as a national board member for several charities to include the Military Family Advisory Network, Military Officer Association of America’s Spouse Advisory Council, and several local non-profits.

Kristine’s family has four dogs: Piper, a black Cocker Spaniel; Bella, a Chiweenie; and Auggie and Hazel, both Lab-Griffon mixes. She holds a master’s degree from Gonzaga University and two bachelor’s degrees from Boise State. In her spare time, Kristine enjoys traveling, reading, gardening, and celebrating life with friends.
