MERIDIAN — The Meridian City Council may increase fines for off-leash dogs.

The council held a public hearing Tuesday for a proposed ordinance that would increase the tiered fines by three to four times.

Currently, the fines for having a dog off its leash in public are $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second and $100 for the third. The ordinance proposes an increase to $100, $200 and $300, respectively.

Fines are enforced by the Idaho Humane Society’s Animal Care and Control Division.
