BOISE, Idaho — State health officials have issued a water quality advisory for part of C.J. Strike Reservoir after detecting elevated levels of toxic algae, also known as cyanobacteria.
The advisory applies to the Bruneau Arm of the reservoir, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Health advisories also remain in effect for Brownlee Reservoir, Hells Canyon Reservoir and several other water bodies across Idaho.
C.J. Strike Reservoir, about 30 miles south of Mountain Home, is a popular destination for boating, fishing and camping. Recreation information, including campground reservations and access details, is available through Idaho Power.
Officials are urging boaters, anglers, swimmers and other recreationists to use caution around affected areas. People should keep children, pets and livestock away from water that may contain harmful algal blooms, which can produce toxins that pose risks to humans and animals.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare says harmful algal blooms can appear as green paint-like scum, mats or discolored water. Information about recognizing and avoiding toxic algae can be found on the department’s website. Read more…
