Idaho Humane Society warns of new scam wave targeting people with missing pets

The Idaho Humane Society is warning pet owners about a surge in scams targeting those who have posted about missing pets.

The Humane Society says the scams often appear legitimate and urgent, with fraudsters impersonating the Ada County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho Humane Society.

In one scam, pet owners receive texts claiming their dog was involved in a bite incident, demanding a fee for retrieval. Another involves calls from scammers posing as the Idaho Humane Society, requesting thousands of dollars for a supposed life-saving surgery.

Additionally, scammers may ask for a “processing fee” to return a found pet. Officials emphasize that neither the Idaho Humane Society nor the Ada County Sheriff’s Office will request payment over the phone for lost pets or emergency medical care. Read more…
