Dexter is a confident guy, no doubt because he’s aware of how handsome he is. There is much more to Dexter than just his good-looks though; he’s smart, athletic and eager to learn. He’s easily motivated by both toys and treats which his previous owner used to train him how to sit, down, shake and stay. During his time in a foster home we also learned that he understands boundaries well, and is content lying down with a chew toy if you’re busy.
Dexter is house trained but his person needs to pay attention closely to when he is trying to let them know he needs to go outside. He’ll go over to the door and sit next to it patiently when he needs to go outside. He isn’t very animated about needing to go outside until he knows you’re taking him out.
While laid back in the house Dexter perks right up when it’s time to go for a walk. He has not been trained to walk nicely on a normal collar, but does well with a front clipping harness on. He may bark at dogs or chase small animals when out of the house but can be easily distracted by a toy or treat. He’s has a great time during shelter playgroups but we do ask that if you have other dogs you bring them in for an introduction. Though we have not seen it here at the shelter, his previous owner did report some resource guarding so he will need a home without young children. He does require a home without cats, small animals and livestock.
Dexter’s ideal home would include continued training, exercise and someone who loves to play. He’s a fun dog with a goofy personality and is always looking for the next adventure.
