One Lucky Dog

Camie’s story is a perfect example of how even dogs with a lot of obstacles to overcome can eventually find a perfect home through the Idaho Humane Society.

The story began when Camie arrived at the City of Jerome Animal Shelter as a puppy. With a facility with limited space and seemingly unlimited animals, Camie faced a difficult road to an adoption. Luckily, through a shelter to shelter transfer Camie was moved to the Idaho Humane Society in Boise to be placed up for adoption.

After arriving at the IHS, Camie was selected to be placed in the shelter’s Inmate Dog Alliance Project of Idaho (IDAPI). As a puppy entering the program she was housetrained, crate trained, and taught all her obedience commands. Most importantly, her inmate trainers spent countless hours socializing Camie and providing her with an abundance of love that had been very obviously missing in her earlier life.

As Camie had grown during two months in the IDAPI program she’d begun to experience some problems with her hind legs. When she returned to the Idaho Humane Society an x-ray showed Camie had severe hip dysplasia in both her hips.

Luckily for Camie, Jeff Rosenthal, the IHS Executive Director and veterinary surgeon agreed to help. Camie had surgeries know as Femoral Head Ostectomy on both her hips to relieve the pain and discomfort of hip dysplasia.

After each surgery Camie faced recovery like a champ. She was an easy patient and loved the IHS medical center staff and veterinarians more with each visit. Her sunny attitude never waivered, no matter what physical limitations she was facing.

Camie spent several months in a foster home recuperating from her surgeries. After her last surgery Camie’s foster parent looked for signs that Camie was fully recovered. When petite 35 pound Camie could wrestle with her two 75 pound canine foster brothers until they cried uncle, it was clear Camie was ready to tackle the challenge of a new home too.

Although not surprising for a dog we already know is very lucky, Camie quickly found a new home. It was a perfect match and she’s now living happily, and most importantly healthy and pain-free with her new family.

The IDAPI program depends on donations. To learn more about the program or contribute to helping other dogs get the second chance that Camie received, please visit the IDAPI website.

 Adoptable Pet: Talula

Talula is a nine week old, spayed female, Labrador and German Shepherd mix. In early June, Talula's mother arrived at the Idaho Humane Society shelter very pregnant. Within days she had delivered a huge, but healthy litter of 11 puppies. Talula and her siblings were raised in a loving IHS foster home with their mother. Talula loves to be the center of attention. She has no problem pushing her larger siblings out of the way or being a bit dramatic to get the attention she desires! She's just a baby and needs a very committed home ready for the challenges of a puppy. She'll need patient, reward-based training to learn her obedience commands and house manners. Like any puppy, Talula's first few months in her adoptive home will need to be filled with lots of positive experiences with meeting strangers, other dogs, cats, kids and all sorts of new things to help her social skills. She's a very smart puppy who's ready to take on life's adventures with a new owner. Located in kennel 415, her log-in number is #10712804. Talula is just one of over 45 dogs available for adoption at the Idaho Humane Society shelter right now.
